Why solar in Corby isn't the same as solar anywhere else
Corby's housing tells you a lot before you get the ladder off the van. Big parts of the town went up in the fifties and sixties when the steelworks brought thousands of families down from Scotland — Lodge Park, Kingswood, Beanfield, Corby Old Village on the edge of it. Those estates have simple, generous pitched roofs, which is about as good as it gets for a solar array. What they often don't have is a consumer unit that's seen this century, so a fair few need the board sorting before anything else happens. We'd rather find that on the survey than on install day.
Then there's the newer end of town. Oakley Vale, Little Stanion, Priors Hall — built in the last twenty-odd years, tidy roofs, modern boards, usually a straightforward job. The catch on the newer estates is roof space that's been carved up by dormers and rooflights, so the panel layout takes a bit more thought to get a decent array on without it looking like an afterthought.
Out in the villages it changes again. Gretton, Rockingham, Weldon, Brigstock, Cottingham — ironstone and limestone, older roofs, and in places conservation area rules that affect where panels can go and how visible they are from the road. That's worth knowing before you fall in love with a layout. Kettering, Rothwell and Desborough bring Victorian terraces into the mix, where the roof is smaller and the array has to earn every panel.
None of that is a reason not to go solar. It's the reason we come out and look properly rather than quoting off a satellite image. Same goes for battery sizing — a house where everyone's out at work all day wants a very different setup to one with someone home using the power as it's made. We ask about that, because it changes what we'd recommend.

Do you charge for a solar survey or a quote?
No. The home survey is free and so is the written quote. We come out, get up and look at the roof properly, check your shading and go through a year of your electricity usage. You then get a fixed price in writing to think about in your own time. No deposit to book a survey, no pressure, no expiring discounts.
Are you MCS certified?
Yes. DNA Father and Son's Electrical Ltd is MCS certified for Solar PV and Battery Storage under certification number NAP-62356, with NAPIT as our certification body. We are also RECC members and TrustMark endorsed. MCS certification is what allows you to claim the Smart Export Guarantee payments for the electricity you send back to the grid, so it is worth checking any installer has it before you sign anything.
How many solar panels will I need?
It depends on your roof and how much electricity you actually use, not on a number off a price list. A typical Corby three bedroom semi usually lands somewhere between eight and fourteen panels, but a south facing roof with no shading will do more work per panel than an east-west split with a chimney in the way. We size the array around your usage so you are not paying for generation you will never use.
Do I need a battery to have solar panels?
No, solar works fine on its own. What a battery does is stop you exporting cheap electricity in the afternoon and buying it back expensive in the evening. If the house is empty during the day, a battery makes a big difference. If someone is home all day using the power as it is generated, it makes less. We will tell you honestly which of those you are.
Will I need a fuseboard upgrade to have solar fitted?
Sometimes. Older boards without RCD protection, or ones already full with no spare ways, usually need replacing before the system goes in. We check this at the survey and it goes in the written quote up front, so it is not a surprise cost halfway through the install. We are NAPIT registered electricians, so if it does need doing we do it ourselves rather than sending someone else out.
Can I spread the cost of a solar and battery system?
Yes. DNA Father and Son's Electrical Ltd is an Introducer Appointed Representative (Financial Services Register No. 1022667) of Phoenix Financial Consultants Limited, who are a credit broker and not a lender. They offer finance from a panel of lenders. All finance is subject to status and credit checks. Ask us at the survey and we will explain how it works.

Are you insured, and do you guarantee your work?
We carry £5 million public liability insurance and 10 year insurance backed guaranteed. Panels, inverters and batteries carry their own manufacturer warranties on top of that, which are typically far longer, and we go through exactly which warranty covers what before you commit.

Our work now is renewables, solar, battery storage and EV charging. We are still NAPIT registered and happy to help existing customers with electrical work connected to their system, such as a fuseboard upgrade or a supply for a charge point.
